It's a common saying among those who consider themselves to be Christians that "Christians are not perfect, just forgiven." The impression generated by this idea is that the difference between the unbeliever and the Christian is forgiveness and means that the Christian can do the same things and even have the same heart and character as the sinner.
The new birth is the covenant of a new heart, which places, as a free gift, the agape love of Christ within the heart of that person. It destroys all systems of human works, all religions of "works". Forgiveness is only part of the New Covenant. Without the new heart forgiveness is impossible.
Jeremiah 31:31-34
31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Ezekiel 11:19-21
19 And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:
20 That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.
21 But as for them whose heart walketh after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations, I will recompense their way upon their own heads, saith the Lord GOD.
The whole point of salvation is that Christ would save people from their sins. Christ came to save people from sin and to make mankind the dwelling place of God. There is no salvation from judgement unless there is an actual salvation from sin and selfishness. Either a person is truly experiencing salvation from sin or he is living in sin. No place in the scriptures represents the real believer as continuing in sin and rebellion to God.
It's not possible to be saved from our sins untill we accept Jesus Christ as or Lord and savior. Somebody who is living their lives in sin, isn't saved from their sin. The Angel, in announcing to Mary and Joseph, the birth of Christ and what they were to name the baby, also made the statement, "You shall call His name Jesus for He shall save His people from their sins". Salvation is being saved from sin. If we are not freed from the bondage of sin then we're not saved from anything.
There are people today who want to be forgiven but they don't want to be transformed through the renewing of their minds to walking a true Christian walk in life. Still, when you are born again, God forgives all of your sins to that point in your life but expects you to change you living habits to adhere to His Word. God does not expect any of us to be perfect but He does expect us to confess our sins and ask Him for His forgiveness, which He freely supplies in the name of Jesus Christ.
Romans 10:9-10
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
After you did Romans 10:9-10, you were born again. You may not feel any different but in God's eyes you just bacame one of His children. Salvation here means that all of your past sins were erased. There is nothing you can do that would exclude you from God being willing to forgive you. Forgiveness is available for all unrighteousness, fornication, covetousness, maliciousness; envy, murder, deceit, lying; gossiping, hateing God, pride, inventing evil things, disobedience to parents, breaking covenents, stealing, homosexuality, adultery, alcohol over use, drug use, drug dealing, gluttony (over eating) and any thing else you can add to the list.
Don't fool yourself into believing that you are too bad to be forgiven. All you need is enough humility to accept Jesus Christ as your savior and ask God to forgive you and he will forgive you.
GOD'S WILLINGNESS TO FORGIVE SIN
Following are just a sampling of the scriptures in the Old and New Testament showing God's willingness to forgive.
Psalms 103:12
12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
The distance from the east to the west in infinite! As you go from the east toward the west you never reach the west because the further you go the west still lies ahead.
Psalms 86:5
5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.
Isaiah 55:7
7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.
Acts 13:38
38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:
1 John 1:9
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Ephesians 1:7
7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Colossians 1:14
14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
2 Corinthians 5:21
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
1 John 1:7-8
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1 Timothy 2:5-6
5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
We have an advocate (defense attorney) a mediator with God, Jesus Christ. What God is willing to do is recorded in His Word. God sent His son Jesus Christ to redeem us from the curse of the law and enable us to be saved by His grace. We as Christians are forgiven when we ask. The unbeliever, when he or she reaches the point of believing and confessing the name of Jesus Christ, from that time on has the same forgiveness.
Paul, in the letter to the Romans, gives the following instruction to new believers:
Romans 6:11-23
11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
In conclusion the Word of God sums it up better that any thing:
1 John 2:1-2
1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
Payment (propitiation) for the sins of the whole world. Payment for the sins of His people Israel and the Church.
2 Chronicles 7:14
14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
